Anne’s Quiz #48

History of Computers

I've seen some of this history personally, but for the pre-1970 stuff, I relied on other accounts. Computers have developed far more rapidly than anyone imagined in the 1950's. One amusing example is of a character Robert Heinlein created for his space-traveling novels: Andrew Jackson "Slipstick" Libby, so-called because of his ability to manipulate a slide rule (aka, slipstick) so rapidly. The idea of using slide rules when navigating starships is ludicrous now. If you don't know what a slide rule looks like, click here.
