Anne's High School Activities

Anne went to Wheaton High School in Maryland, graduating in 1976.

Anne served as the treasurer for the school's National Honor Society chapter. This is part of the induction ceremony for the following year's crop of students.

Kay Kimball talked me into auditioning for choir. I filled a second soprono slot, which pleased the director since our year was heavy with alto voices.

The choir took a fun trip to Boston, with the excuse of a couple of performances. Mostly we had fun, pillow fighting in the hotel room and ordering pizza for an impromptu party in the hall. Several of us had a memorable dinner at Benihana's. There were 6 of us so we were seated at a table with another couple to make up the 8 places. We enjoyed chatting with them during the meal. They left before us and totally shocked us by paying our bill.

This solar house project actually succeeded in heating water.

Another science project that I did with Kay was to explore how primitive ceramics might have been made. First we gathered sawdust as one of our fuel sources. Shelton obligingly cut up firewood for us.

Then we had to dig up some good clay and shape our pots.

Our 'kilns' were pits dug in the ground at Sleepy Creek. We varied the fuel source to see which would produce a hot enough temperature to harden the pottery. Dad took lots of slides so we had a nice presentation for class. All in all, it was a pretty good excuse to go camping, play in the mud, and roast marshmallows.

The high point of my high school career was being a Presidential Scholar. Only 126 seniors were chosen from the entire country, 2 from each state and a few at-large students. Initial selection came from PSAT test scores and then we had to fill out an application with an essay and details of our activities. In hindsight, my topic of population control is pretty funny! Those selected got an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, DC. The theory was that the president would present the medals in person, but state events precluded that for us.

The closest the Presidential Scholars got to President Ford was at the reception of France's President D'Estaing on the White House lawn. Here are pictures on display at a later event.

A reception for the Presidential Scholars was held at the State Department.

We got a special tour of the white house. The other people in this picture are of the other winner from Maryland and his family.

Graduation was held at University of Maryland's Cole Field House. My class was over 600 people.

Gerry Hubbell came east and timed his visit to coincide with my graduation.
