We took marvelous driving trips across country. Mother and Dad made a point of getting their children to all 50 states before graduating from high school.

Even in 1970, Anne was taking pictures of trees. We
took a driving trip across country and saw many
memorable sites, such as New Orleans, the Alamo,
Cochise's Stronghold, Mesa Verde, and these trees
at Sequoia National Park.
Mother and Dad paused for a moment in a
cypress in Monterey. I wish I had had
color film to show the sunset.

And then when we finally got home, Anne's
pumpkin vines had taken over a quarter of the yard,
all around the clothes pole. Notice the large pumpkin
at the bottom of the picture. That one weighed in at
15 lbs when ripe.

In 1972 we flew to Hawaii, the only state we didn't drive to!
Dr. Scharschmidt, a colleague of Dad's from Germany,
met us there briefly and treated us to this ride in
an outrigger canoe.
We hiked across old lava fields to view Mauno Loa erupting
at Volcanoes National Park.
Since we'd seen the northernmost community, we made a point of
finding the southernmost one, too.
We all acquired Hawaiian garb and posed here on Waikiki beach.
After a trip to the Polynesian Culture Center, Anne learned
to use the Maori yo-yo.
Anne also got a kimono in Hawaii and dressed up for
Halloween.
