6-Week Cross-Country Car Trip

Since Glen was now staying home with the girls instead of having an office job, he could take the time to drive across country. Anne flew to Cleveland later to meet them and do the latter part of the trip.

Antlers were used to make an arch in Jackson Hole.

They drove north to Yellowstone to view the geysers and other attractions. This is Old Faithful.

This deer posed obligingly.

One of their stops included a lovely indoor pool.

A picnic lunch stop.

Mount Rushmore.

Then on to the Coopers' Cottage and Cedar Point. Jenny liked 'driving' one of the cars at the amusement park.

Lisa gets an early driving lesson.

Aunt Laurie joins the girls for a train ride.

Grandma tried the rapids ride with Sarah, Jenny, and Stephanie.

Leaving Cleveland, we drove through Pennsylvania and visited with Aunt Beth and Uncle John. Then we took a brief tour of Gettysburg before heading for Washington.

We also spent a day looking at sites in downtown Philadelphia, including Independence Hall.

We met up with Shelton's family in Maryland, giving us a great opportunity for family pictures.

We spent a day touring downtown Washington. Lincoln is impressively large.

This statue of Einstein is much more approachable.

Granddaddy found the Battle of the Bulge memorial at Arlington. He fought there himself. The text reads:
"Dedicated to the gallant and victorious men and women who participated in the Battle of the Bulge, World War II, 16 December 1944 thru 25 January 1945 in Belgium and Luxembourg. The greatest battle ever fought by the United States Army. Presented by the veterans of the Battle of the Bulge on 16 December 1986."

We picnicked on the Mall.

Laura and Jenny loved the sprinkler.

We all caravaned down Route 81 to visit with Grandmother Norford. This is the Verona house.

The girls played in the trees at the top of the yard. Some of these trees were transplanted from Sleepy Creek.

Jenny and Sarah climbed the tree by the front door.

Anne, Shelton and Wendy visit with Grandmother. Wendy was able to come along because Glen offered to drive her back to Washington that night so that she could go to work in the morning. He slept in her apartment and then rejoined us the next morning.

We gather on the back porch that Granddaddy had added to the house.

Grandmother Norford with all her Hubbell/Cooper greatgrandchildren.

The girls get their feet wet in the Atlantic Ocean near Savannah, GA.

On to Tampa and Roger's family. Left to right:
Anne, Tommy, Jenny, Sarah, Lisa, Samantha, Kelsey, and Glen.

Roger is making sure Glen gets all the spots clean. Yes, we staged this picture.

Roger and Carol had put in a pool. All three children would learn to swim.

Lisa got a turn at the wheel of Roger's boat.

We visited an animal park. The kids loved the fountain.

Anne, Jenny and Laura relax at the water park while the more adventuresome members of the party do the slides.

Jenny on the beach in Clearwater, where we rented condos for a week and played with Shelton's family.

Lisa examines the bullet holes in a wall at the Alamo in Texas.

The River Walk in San Antonio, Texas.

Carlsbad Cavern in the southeast corner of New Mexico. We stayed for dusk to watch the bats come out.

Lisa is impressed by the formations inside this huge cavern.

The large chamber inside Carlsbad. Look for the small people and railing.

The spectacular logs of the Petrified Forest.

While not venturing down to the river, we did hike a little along the south rim of the Grand Canyon.

Meteor Crater, especially fascinating to Glen and Anne, who spent a lot of time calculating craters at work.
