Due to pre-eclampsia (aka toxemia), Alan was not
being well nourished and ultrasounds revealed that
his abdominal cavity was lagging in development by
5 weeks compared to his head. The perinatalogist
recommended inducing labor immediately, so we returned
home from the doctor's office, packed up, and hustled
over to Los Robles Hospital. My doctor sent us there,
despite not being on staff, because of the NICU. She
called a colleague who was on staff to attend me.

Alan John was born 6 weeks early on January 28, 2000.
He weighed just 3 lbs, 7 oz.
Alan went immediately to the NICU.

Roger actually sat like this for close to an hour. He really impressed the nurses.
This is Eileen, who actually delivered Alan when the doctor
didn't make it back from dinner quite in time.
Alan was pretty wired for his first few days of life.
He was fed initially by a tube through his nose to his
stomach. He wouldn't be allowed to come home until he
didn't need the tube anymore.
Is it a smile? Alan was still in the NICU here. I went at least twice each day to cuddle
him.
Alan eventually graduated to an open bassinet, another necessary step before being
allowed to come home.
