UCSB Winter 2001

This first set was my Christmas present from Lisa. Others follow from subsequent trips to UCSB. The photo ops are tremendous there and I just can't resist.

Lindsey, one of Lisa's friends, looks for something of interest at low tide. This is the beach right next to (and down the bluff from) her dorm.

Snow is not plentiful, but sand is, so...

Jenn, Rob and Lindsey -- friends of Lisa's.

Jenn is Lisa's accomplice in many adventures.

Lisa is climbing out on this rock to capture the starfish.

Storke Tower houses bells and the newspaper staff.

Morgan and Jason -- no, they're not dating, just posing for Lisa's camera.

We made a two-car expedition to UCSB on New Year's Day, just to let our guests see what the campus is like.

The campus is criss-crossed with bike lanes that are painted and treated like roads. Pedestrians enter them at their peril. The bumps you see here are to alert the unwary that they are about to step into the bike zone. Lisa claims that every year, some parents get clobbered when visiting campus.

We walked around campus a bit, although all the buildings were closed for the holiday.

After our brief walking tour, some of the hardier members of the party hiked over to Goleta Beach via the trail along the bluff. Glen, Roger and I moved the cars. Goleta Beach State Park has a very nice playground and, even more important, bathrooms!

Here's Roger coming down the slide!

And Alan takes a turn.

Alan and Anne match hands through the plexiglas viewport, another part of the play equipment.

Around 4:15, we went back to the beach by Lisa's dorm so we could walk out on the sand and rocks at low tide which was supposed to peak at 5pm.

The kids were excited to find a live crab tangled in the seaweed. When Wesley tried to turn it over, he discovered another one under it.

This picture doesn't do justice to either the people or the lighting, but I tried.

This is the kind of stuff the kids were enjoying poking around in. There are several sea urchin shells here and Lisa actually found a whole sand dollar. We also saw the starfish, but Lisa's picture above is much better than mine. The starfish is probably even the same one.

These birds, including a pelican, were way out on the rocks, probably fishing in the surf.

Lisa invited us to come to the beach on my birthday, January 13th. She would watch the smaller set while Glen and I hiked around and took pictures. Since the weather was predicted to be in the 60's and low tide was at 3pm, she tempted us into doing it.

This is one of the paths along the bluffs.

These birds gather in the lagoon.

Time to head back up the stairs.

Roger gets a last jump off a rock before I run out of film.

This captures the essence of the day. You could even see the islands off the coast.
