Settling in at UCSB

Lisa and Sarah moved into their respective dorms on September 14th.

Glen strongly encouraged the girls to pack as much as possible in bins so it could be easily stacked and carried. He took out the bench seats and laid two layers of bins in the back of the van. Bikes and miscellaneous odd-shaped objects went on top of the bins. Then Glen put the rack on the trailer hitch and tied 8 bins on there. Lisa rode with Glen in the van and the rest of us went in the Vista.

Sarah's dorm looks like it might have started life as an apartment complex in the 50's. The arrow marks the entrance to her unit. It's located in Isla Vista, a tiny community immediately adjacent to the campus. However, the Fontainebleu Annex is actually part of the UCSB dorm system, not an independent apartment building.

They have a swimming pool on the premises, as well as a laundry room, but their meals are served at the main building, a 3-minute walk away.

We moved Sarah's stuff into the living room and then let her distribute it to the appropriate places.

This is the small but serviceable kitchen. She and her roommates (4 girls share this 2-bedroom suite) don't really need the kitchen, but it's handy for snacks and missed meals. Sarah's roommate is Karina Oriard, a friend from high school. They requested placement together. The others are Becky Brooks, a second-year student, and Winifred, a senior.

Lisa requested and got a single in San Raphael, on campus. Unloading her stuff took 5 minutes: these 3 healthy guys just filled up 4 laundry carts with her bins and stuff and wheeled it away. The concept with on-campus dorms is that they have staff waiting with the carts. You pull up in the loading zone and they unload everything quickly, then you go park your car in a designated lot.

Lisa is on the third floor. Her windows are marked with the arrow.

Her room is small, but it's all hers. No more snoring roommate's boyfriend to contend with. And with the bed lofted, there's actually enough room for quite a bit of stuff.
