Road Trip to Mono Hot Springs

It was just 17 miles from our condos to Mono Hot Springs. However, the adventure took all afternoon, since after around 5 miles, the road turned into somewhat-paved, one-lane mountain road.

That's Aunt Beth and Uncle John's rental car.

This hairpin turn allowed Carol to get a nice shot of our van. (CLC)

At one point, we all had to pull over to allow 5 trucks to go by. (CLC)

View from road as we drop down from the 9000' ridge into the valley that contains Mono Hot Springs. (CLC)

The junipers at this elevation (~9000') spoke to me. They said, "Take my picture!"

Finally we reached the right spot. The ranger had told us that access to the springs was free near the bridge.

This is the South Fork of the San Joaquin River.

Hot springs bubble out of the ground, forming muddy pools like this one, and making the paths muddy, too. (CLC)

Dad chose a good spot to relax and wait for the rest of us. (CLC)

We hiked down to the river, despite rocks and mud. (CLC)

Uncle Jerry tried a bit of fishing. We actually didn't spend much time in the warm water. It was more interesting to play in the river, which wasn't muddy.

Sarah decorated this rock while some of us waded in, pants and all.

Alan points something out to Daddy, or is Glen trying to keep him from falling in?

After drying off, we decided to see what the spa looked like.

We found a little store, a very rustic Mexican restaurant, bathrooms, and assorted stone buildings.

I had to include this picture of the snow vehicles for Alan.
