Fire Station Tour

One of the parents of a Kindergartner in Alan's class (Eric's dad, Jack), is friends with the captain at a Simi Valley Fire Station. So Jack arranged for us to take a tour one morning before school. Since his dad organized it, Eric was there. Emily, Grant, Alex, Andrew, and Alan went along, too, as well as little siblings Eli (Grant's) and Jenny (Alex's).

The Captain took us all through the firehouse and showed us where the fire fighters spend their downtime.

He had the kids show him how they stop, drop, and roll, in case of catching their clothes on fire.

The kitchen is to envy.

Each of the three shifts has its own refrigerator. A shift will stay at the firehouse for 24 hours at a time.

A typical sleeping cubicle.

He opened virtually every compartment on the engine and the ladder truck to show the kids all the special equipment.

He methodically put on the whole set of gear, including the mask, so they'd know not to be afraid if they were ever approached by a firefighter in an emergency situation.

And as a finale, he let them each try aiming the hose, after first kidding his friend Jack by trying to spray him.
