There were many of these frogs (toads?) at the
Colorado Welcome Center that night.
One of the less pleasing sights along the road, pen after pen
of cattle. Cattle in such close quarters stink!
This stunned me -- the wide-load house was actually passing
vehicles that were 'only' doing 70 mph! And no, we weren't in
Kansas!
Roosevelt National Forest. We passed through part of it
on our way.
Rocky Mountain National Park.
These deer (elk?) held up traffic.
Jenny decided to clean the windshield to make for better
picture-taking.
Meanwhile, Sarah was ecstatic to have a bit of phone
reception, a rarity in remote areas. Chris is on the
other end.
Snow!
We got rained on, starting at lunchtime. We decided to
eat in a McDonald's instead of picnicking before heading
up into the mountains.
The road goes as high as 12,200-feet elevation. This is
tundra; we're well above the tree-line. While the rest of the
country sweltered, we were shivering and running the car heater.
This little plant was right next to the parking lot.
Once again, we crossed the Continental Divide, 3 times each
way. This pass was not the highest point of the road
through the Park.
Coming down, back into trees.
Driving slowly, I spotted this quail and chicks crossing the road.
We stopped and waited for them and luckily no one came up
behind us and hit the car.
We actually spotted a moose!
I stopped here to take wildflower pictures.
They covered the side of the hill.
Paintbrush.
Looking down hill from the turnout.
There were a number of these coming down on the west side.
The Colorado River headwaters are in these mountains.
We finally drove out of the rain at sunset.
