Graduations

Can you spot Jenny? She's in yellow, wearing black pants. (Bob Knight photo)

Jenny graduated from Moorpark High School on June 14th. As an Honor Grad, she gets to march in first and sit in the front row. She is in the group of 4 yellow gowns, 2nd from the right side of the picture.

Jenny is the one in yellow with black pants.

Jenny reported that the band set a new record for Pomp and Circumstance. They played for 20 minutes 12 seconds while the graduates marched in. Each year, they hold a pool trying to predict how long they'll have to play.

We were seated a bit behind and to the left of the white canopy on the visitor's side of the stadium. (Bob Knight photo)

The Honor Grads are those students who finished up with a grade-point average of 4.0+. AP classes with 5-point A's make it possible to get better than a 4.0. Jenny was one of 38 out of a graduating class of ~570 who managed this feat.

Here's Jenny receiving her special medallion.

Jenny receives her 'diploma'. Actually, it's just the folder. They collect the actual document afterwards. (Bob Knight photo)

Alan put on his ear protectors when the people behind us started cheering.

And Roger was rather upset by the noise, too.

Jenny and others were rather bored waiting for the rest of the students to get their diplomas. It takes a long time to read that many names.

Even Mr. Hackett, the band director, didn't look too alert.

The finale with exploding streamers is exciting.

Jenny got this nice certificate from the College Board people. To quote their accompanying statement:
"Granted to students who receive an average grade of at least 3.5 on all AP Exams taken, and grades of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams."

And then on June 16th, we attended Sarah's graduation from UCSB with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics.

We were all pretty excited that the speaker would be Adam Savage of MythBusters fame. Alan had made a sign he insisted on displaying. Adam turned out to be an excellent choice, delivering a wise and witty speech.

Sarah is on the stage shaking hands. She's just left of center.

Sarah gets to shake Adam Savage's hand.

Congratulations, Sarah!
