The flowers caught my eye, of course.
A convenient pepper tree by the trail.
This development is all pretty new. In previous years, we'd
hiked near those water tanks, but there were no roads, let
alone houses.
Hiking north back toward the park, you can see the 23
freeway to our right, and maybe even glimpse the
bridge curving east into the 118 freeway.
Nice view of downtown Moorpark.
Another hike was more of a stroll. We drove to Rancho Simi Park
in Simi and walked around the duck pond.
The artificial pond system includes a man-made creek with
waterfalls.
The boys found another good tree to climb.
Next up: a real hike, almost 5 miles. Glen took along the
GPS so we know how far we went. This venue is Malibu Creek
State Park. We parked at the eastern edge and hiked west
along Crags Road. We almost made it to the M.A.S.H. filming
site, but stopped short because we didn't realize how
close we'd gotten until looking at this map later.
Jenny did this hike with us since she was home for Spring Break.
The creek is lovely, at least in the spring.
We spotted what we thought might be a large nest in this oak.
Lovely example of poison oak.
Century Lake is formed by a dam and is probably part of
Mulholland's system of reservoirs for LA's water supply.
Alan climbs the rocks next to the 2 picnic tables by
Century Lake.
This lizard watched us carefully from one rock over.
A pretty field of lupine.
The trail continues on past Century Lake.
The trail crosses Malibu Creek on this bridge. Apparently
spring flooding took out the substantial-looking railings.
A truly decorative log.
