Alan's Art Portfolio

Alan was nominated by his art teacher, Mrs. Stupp, to be screened for an 'artistically gifted' designation. She had saved 2 projects at school and wanted us to come up with 3 more from home for his portfolio that the committee would review. Alan had to title, annotate, say what inspired him, describe any hurdles he'd overcome in doing each project, and state why he chose this piece to be part of his portfolio. Yes, the committee gave him the official designation, which doesn't give him any extra program, but does help in the perception game so future teachers may give him more leeway in being creative. And he's quite proud of his work.

This vase was done at Peach Hill in 2nd grade.

"I used the colors and shapes because there was a flower vase on a round table in the front of the classroom. I got my ideas from the same thing mentioned in question 1. I am good at getting straight lines straight when I do them quickly. I like this one because it looks nice because of the colors and shapes."

"View from Planet X" was done at Peach Hill in 2nd grade.

"This is the view of space from a random atmosphereless planet. It has a comet streaking across the sky, a few neutron stars, a star that is closer than the others, a supernova and a random ocean planet towards the right side. I was going to put a black hole near the blue planet but I didn't want to in the middle of doing so so I colored over the black hole with black, the color of the background. It is a good piece of art because it shows how color and shapes can make art wonderful."

"Seashell" was drawn in Spring 2007, in first grade.

"I had a shell that I had to draw. I wiggled my hand to get the wavy outline of the shell. It looks like a real shell."

"ThunderKnight", "changing the world with electricity" was created at Highland Drive Elementary in 3rd grade.

"I made this because we had to make up a superhero in art class. To make the person, I used black over red with an outline of yellow. I put this in becuase I like the person."

Owl from 3rd grade, Fall 2008.

"I made this one by copying an owl from a picture but making it in secondary colors. I made it because we had to choose an animal and a color to make it and then choose a color group that that color is in. I made the background with lots and lots of dark colors. I like this one because it shows how good my artwork is."
