Monongahela National Forest

Freys, Grandma & Grandpa, and our cabinful decided to drive north-east to the Monongahela National Forest and go exploring.

The DS players kept themselves occupied.

The town of Richwood, along Route 39/55

Our first stop was for The Falls of Hills Creek, a set of 3 waterfalls. The Thieves cautionary sign was a good reminder.

First waterfall.

We hiked down a LOT of steps.

I paused midway to take these pictures looking up and down.

These red flowers are Beebalm, or Oswego Tea Plant.

Rhodedendron

Rhodedendron arched over the creek.

Cute little snake at the middle falls observation deck.

Middle Falls.

Jewelweed. Known for its ability to salve poison ivy itch.

Lower Falls.

Lisa went all the way down, but I skipped the last set of steps.

The next stop was a small museum/nature center.

Helpful chart for flowers most likely to be seen. Here's a larger version you can actually read: click here (1.2Mb)

We went a little farther up the road and took a short hike to a lookout that turned out not to have a good view of anything but the road. But these yellow flowers were nice.

The final stop was Cranberry Glades.

We hiked out the boardwalk....

...until it went under water.

Typical ground cover in the bog.

Actual not-ripe cranberries.

Cranberry flowers and berries.
