Beaver Marsh

Beaver Marsh is south of us in the National Park. At dusk, it's an excellent wildlife-viewing spot.

A boardwalk replaces the original towpath since beavers dammed the canal, thus creating the wetland.

Heron, spotted on the short hike to the marsh.

A 'small' turtle.

A bigger turtle. He resembled a rock, until he moved. He's probably around 16" long.

Ah -- we spotted a beaver muskrat!

The muskrat.

Yes, you can tell by the tail that he's not a beaver.

However, he did use the beavers' slide as an exit. The ranger explained that the beavers' dam was just beyond that little rise and that they made and use that slide into the water.

Other kids pointed out this frog. There must have been quite a few of them there, since we could hear them, but they're hard to spot among the leaves.

And finally, a possible beaver, but he's too far away to be sure. We saw another carrying a small log, but by that time the low light and distance were too much for my camera.

We went back in August with Jenny and David.

There's a large fish nibbling on the plants.

A muskrat!
