Hubbell Family Reunion

On Saturday, Aunt Marge, Gerry, Mother, and I walked over to the Conference Center to see the rooftop gardens.

Landscaping included this refreshing creek.

A waterfall drops from the roof of the Conference Center.

Once inside, we ended up with a personal tour guide who showed us a lot of neat features inside the building.

This is above the indoor fountain.

There is a lot of LDS artwork on the walls. Mother particularly liked this one of Jesus.

The auditorium is designed to seat 21,000 people. The structural design cantilevers the balconies so that there are no columns to impede the view.

This facility is now used instead of the Tabernacle for annual LDS conferences.

The seats are designed to not exactly line up, so each person will be able to see past the people in front.

The circles on the floor are vents to the parking structure below, to keep the air flowing when the auditorium is full.

An interesting piece of artwork -- it's done by using a variety of finishes on the same stone, rather than painting it.

Mormon and his Book.

This painting is impressive just for the shear size. It's on a canvas, not painted on the wall as a mural would be.

view north from the rooftop. We've made it to the gardens we initially came to see.

We're over that huge auditorium -- hard to imagine. These are the skylights.

They used a mixture of soil and something lighter to keep the weight down. Also, it's not very deep. The tree root balls were encased in steel cages which were then attached to the roof to lend the trees some stability.

This mural is etched in the stone.

Columbine.

Past the fountain and formal landscaping, we came to prairie. This section of garden is simply mown down in the fall and allowed to regenerate as it pleases.

The evergreens are bristlecone pines.

Milkweed.

Yes, we're still on the roof. Amazing.

Cranesbill.

Harebells.
