Aunt Marge, Placerville

On the road, past Sacramento. Mother and I drove to Placerville to visit with Aunt Marge, while Roger and Alan hung out with Sarah.

We're coming into timber/logging country.

Coming into Placerville.

We picked up Aunt Marge at her apartment.

We took a short scenic drive before lunch. Aunt Marge had wanted to take us to a very historic hotel that now serves lunch, but it was closed on Mondays.

So we ended up in Hangtown (the historic part of Placerville) at the Buttercup Pantry.

It was an excellent choice.

We each had to take pictures of the hanging baskets at the front of the restaurant.

After lunch, we drove a short distance to the Placerville Union Cemetery where Uncle Bob is now.

Aunt Marge is pointing to his resting place.

It's supremely fitting to have this magnificent redwood shading his spot.

On to Hangtown, a Gold Rush-era boomtown.

Effigy of a hanging man. Aunt Marge tells us that in the boom days, there might be a hanging every day from this window.

We shopped a bit at the hardware store, established in 1852, as the sign proclaims.

The wood floors are vintage.

Quaint and touristy.

Aunt Marge's retirement community.

Front lobby.

Lovely library.

Aunt Marge indulges a creative bent with art classes.

She particularly likes this painting (done by another resident) since it is reminiscent of Uncle Bob and his fishing trips.

Ping-pong just a few doors away from her suite.

Brand new kitchen which she doesn't use because of the excellent meal plan.

Memories of Uncle Bob.

Younger versions of cousins Gerry, Jim, and Rich.

Aunt Marge made these baskets from pine needles gathered at her home in Camino.

Overhead of the community of several hundred residents with 3 main apartment blocks.

Waving goodbye from her 3rd-floor balcony.

We stopped at the vista point on the drive back. This is Grizzly Bay.

The Benicia-Martinez Bridge that carries Route 680.
