Rest of the CA Trip

Henry Cowell State Park

Monday: Wendy, Vanessa, Jenny, David, Mother, Glen, Roger, and Anne had a chance to do some tree-hugging. Henry Cowell State Park is near Fenton, CA, just up the hills from Santa Cruz.

These are Coast Redwoods, one of the 3 kinds of redwood trees. The others are Giant Sequoias and Dawn Redwoods. Coast Redwoods are the tallest, while Giant Sequoias are the most massive.

Wendy read the explanatory pamphlet with flare!

Camera angle for the previous photo -- I wanted just the right shot of these magnificent trees.

Getting the dirt brushed off afterwards.

This tree is rumored to have served as an overnight shelter for explorer John Fremont.

Here we are inside the hollowed-out tree.

Looking up inside the hollow Fremont tree.

Tiny cone for such a large tree.

This is an albino tree. Usually a plant lacking chlorophyll wouldn't survive, but because these trees merge root systems, an albino tree can thrive on the nutrients it gets from its neighbors.
