Impromptu Hike

Glen and I headed out on a lovely Saturday morning to run errands. We took the van because we planned to buy mulch at Home Depot. We got part-way down Snowville and the engine started to overheat. So we made it to the park headquarters on Riverview and stopped to assess the problem. Various options were available, but we decided the weather was nice, so we'd just let the engine cool while we hiked home to get another car and then figure out what to do with the van.

We picked up the Buckeye Trail where it crosses Snowville, close to Riverview. That's a flowering branch of a buckeye tree.

Glen used the GPS ability on his phone to help navigate.

one of the creeks that drain our Echo Hills neighborhood. We veered off the Buckeye Trail at this point to follow the creek uphill.

Since the creeks weren't showing up on the phone GPS, it was tricky to locate the creek that runs behind our house. We ended up on one that comes up behind the older section of the neighborhood. The last steep slope coming up to the ridge line from the creek was a real challenge. Fortunately, we met some very nice neighbors who happened to be out in their yard. They offered us water and a ride further up the hill back to our house.

So we hiked around 3 miles. Once we rested up a bit, we found some antifreeze fluid and drove back to the van. Glen put a lot of fluid in and managed to drive it back up the hill to home. He diagnosed a crack in the overflow container that might have accounted for the fluid loss, but we took it in for repair anyway and they found an additional leak in the system which has now been fixed.
