On our way in Wisconsin, we tried Culver's, a local chain highly recommended by one of Alan's friends. Yum! And then Alan discovered that they had just expanded their reach and opened one local to us in Ohio.

First board meeting, held in a classroom at Michigan Tech which was not far from our hotel.

Paul Hlava's talk on the geology of the Keweenaw Peninsula.

lunch at Armando's in town, a few blocks from the hotel. We all had to try the local pasties. These are traditional miners' food, a stew baked into a pastry crust that's easy to take to work for lunch.

Shelton at Michigan Tech. Jay Abel Hubbell was the prime mover in getting the state to establish the Michigan Mining School in 1885. He donated land for the school's first buildings. The first of those early buildings was eventually named for him. Hubbell Hall was built in 1890, and demolished in 1968.

Dessert: Paul and I split some pie, to reduce caloric input.

Another Hubbell group at the next table over: Harwoods, Kotulas, and Eric Hubbell.

The Ranger III is the largest piece of moving machinery owned by the National Park Service. It plies the waters of Lake Superior from Houghton to Isle Royale National Park. The trip takes 5 hours each way. The IRNP headquarters building was right below the windows of the hotel, so we got a good view.
