What a treat to watch over the baby fawn all day! Here are a couple of video clips
from when the mama deer came back.
video 1 The doe got spooked by a car coming up the street, and
dashed off for a minute before returning again.
video 2 The doe is back and calls the fawn to her.
Glen spotted the tiny fawn in the front lawn sometime around 8am.
This is a known behavior: a doe will park her fawn somewhere safe while she
browses for food. A tiny fawn can't keep up with her all day. Fawns will stay in
that one spot for hours until she comes back.
The doe returned around noon, but she saw me through the window and got a little spooked.
She backed off to behind the pine trees.
The fawn realized she was there but didn't move until summoned.
The pair paused in our neighbor's backyard.
Mowing the grass later in the afternoon on May 20th didn't spot the doe from
leaving her fawn in virtually the same spot the next morning.
So I got to watch over it all day.
It got a little antsy at one point in the afternoon, stood up, and stretched.
The doe came back after 5pm.
